Ivan Lins (born Ivan Lins de Souza on 14 December 1946 in Rio de Janeiro) is one of the most popular and influential Brazilian singer-songwriters, pianists and composers. He is also a professor at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. His style mainly consists of bossa nova and jazz with influences from classical and rock music. He was born into an Afro-Brazilian family that has always recognized his musical talent: "My mother recognized my musical abilities when I was five years old." He became an independent musician by the time he was 16. Over the years he has worked with many Brazilian musicians, including Milton Nascimento, Sergio Mendes, Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa. Ivan Lins started his career in the late 1960s as a pianist, arranger and leader of the band "The Necessary Evils" (later "The Undercurrent" and finally "The Ivan Lins Band"), alongside other musicians such as Gilberto Gil. He released his first solo album in 1970. His style is heavily influenced by jazz, bebop and bossa nova music. Ivan Lins’ unique voice is one of his greatest artistic talents. His first wife was the singer Miúcha, who inspired many of his first compositions ("A Valsa do Adeus", "Balada para Miúcha" and others). Lins has released more than 30 albums in his career. A collection of Ivan Lins' songs entitled "Amoroso" was released in August 2007 by EMI Music Brazil. This album marked his first commercial release in Brazil since 1998's "Brazilian Classics". With Milton Nascimento, he composed some celebrated songs, including "Cravo e Canela", "Maria da Vila Matilde", and the soundtrack for the film O Tempo Não Para. He is very committed to social causes, especially musical education for young people. He holds regular workshops for young musicians and is a visiting professor at Berklee College of Music, as well as at the prestigious Brazilian institution Fundação Vanzolini.
